When most people think of school lunch, “mystery meat” comes to mind for a lot of kids. Not so for the Trinity cafeteria. Everything from pizza to a grilled quesadilla is offered in the cafeteria.
The most obvious change in lunch is the addition of the sandwich/pasta line. There are a variety of sandwiches, including a roast beef and swiss. There is also a diverse selection of pastas in the new line. The head chef in the FLIK lunchroom, Chef Lee Ashbrook, encourages student input for new ideas.
“Most new ideas come from student input, and we encourage the guys to make their own creations and tell us,” Ashbrook said.
Another change is not food related, exactly. The payment system in place this year is different than previous years. This year students cannot, without a note from the Business Office, charge lunches. “The new system works out for the faculty and students,” Ashbrook said. “It teaches them to take responsibility for their actions and to manage money better; you can’t go to Burger King across the street, order three cheeseburgers and tell them ‘I’ll pay ya later.’”
When asked about students’ dissatisfaction or complaints, he replied, “I haven’t heard any. Make sure to go to your Student Council or to your house rep and tell them, and hopefully they will bring the problems to my attention. Go through the chain of command.”
The last new addition to the cafeteria is the after-school snack bar. Rips is a 100 percent fruit juice slushy in a pouch. The container and easy access are the perfect characteristics for a “to go” kind of snack. The new item seems to be a big hit.
