Just a year removed from a city championship, both the varsity and junior varsity French Scrabble teams completed perfect 7-0 seasons after trouncing perennial powerhouses Manual and DeSales in the final two regular-season matches.

To finish off the sweep, both teams also won their respective tournaments. The varsity dominated DeSales and the JV beat Manual in a close final. This was the second consecutive championship for both teams.

“Manual and DeSales usually mop up the competition, but the last few years we’ve had exceptionally strong showings,” moderator Mr. Alan Wilson said.

In dominating fashion, the Scrabble Rocks outwitted and outplayed the rest of the schools.

“The short game is where it’s at. I’m always a proponent of the short game,” senior Stephen Chan said.

The all-senior varsity, who captured the tournament title last year as the underdog, went into this year’s postseason as the No. 1 seed.

They practiced hard each week and defended their seeding well, winning both postseason games by large margins.

“I think that all of us playing together for a few years has really made us a stronger team that builds off of one another,” senior Mitch Greenwell said.
