There’s been a sudden uproar of generosity these past few months both within school walls and reaching out into the town of Brookfield, and all of it’s time and energy has been directed towards BHS senior Andrew Cabral. In the years he’s been here Andrew has been very active and helped out BHS a good deal through organizations such as peer counseling. Unfortunately he suffers with a problem concerning his esophagus that has put him in and out of school for a while now. His parents were told by a number of doctors that he would not live past the age of seven. Thankfully they were wrong, but his organs aren’t in the right places, and a growth spurt has given him scoliosis. Funding for a procedure to “put his back back in place” has proven to be quite the hardship since many medical bills that aren’t covered by insurance. This is where his fellow BHS peer counselors came in. “One day Mrs. Hazelwood came in to one of our meetings and said ‘He had a big procedure, we should do something.’ So I went online,” recalls senior Jamie Seiffer, also a peer counselor. “We customized them; decided what colors we wanted and what to write on them. We had some shipping problems with China; originally we expected them for Thanksgiving, then Christmas...”. When the bracelets finally did arrive, inscribed with “Andrew...Lean on Me” and selling for $5 a piece the reaction was all that they could have hoped for. “I was shocked at how fast they went,” says Jamie. With 100% of the profits going towards Andrew and his procedure, successful sales brought nothing but smiles to Andrew, his family, and everyone involved.
