Three CHS students, who are members of National Honors Society, took on the task of decorating a plain, boring, white room at the Children’s Village. Sonja Jacobson, junior, Zoe Ball, junior and Kristy Geddes, junior, turned it into a colorful, joyous place for a child to spend his or her time.
As members of NHS, one of the requirements is to have 20 hours toward a volunteer project.
“We wanted to do something other than a fundraiser,” Jacobson said. “It’s not very fun to go around and ask citizens to donate money.”
At the beginning of the project there was no budget to the materials used towards the room. But anything free or donated really helped the project. Jacobson said they went to Shermin Williams and asked if they had any supplies for free. There were many gallons of paint that worked for what they wanted to do.
“They had white, brown, yellow, and green tinted paint,” Jacobson said.
Along with finding supplies that were free, two businesses donated money to the cause. Sunshine Minting and Triple Play donated $150 each. The money went toward a new bedspread, pillows, mirror and curtains. The room already had a bed and desk. Everything else was supplied by the volunteers.
“The decorations that we bought were themed for a little girl,” Ball said.
The students painted the room green and it had a big tree with leaves blowing toward the door of the room. Altogether the project took two and a half months to finish. They started in the beginning of February and finished in the middle of April.
“We met three times a week for one to three hours each day,” Jacobson said.
Ball said that the project was really fun and she is happy that they decided to do a hand on project.
“It was creative and very fun,” Jacobson said. “Not only was it fun, but it was something new for the three of us.”
