Sophomore Jeana Brooklyn Canady has been playing softball since she was 5 years old. She tried playing it one day and from then on she loved it. She plays pitcher, short stop, and second base. Out of them all her favorite to play is short stop because there is a lot of action at this position.
Canady’s favorite number to wear is number 13. She considers this her lucky number because everyone always says it’s an unlucky number (Friday the 13th for instance). She chooses 13 as the number on the back of her jersey every year.
The accomplishments she wishes to make this year are to win, be the best that she can be, and work as hard as she can to get better.
The best play she’s ever made was when she was pitching and there was a pickle between third and home. She ran home to help out the catcher and got the ball and tagged the runner out at home. But plays she has done haven’t always been the best. Her freshman year playing for the lady bears she was pitching and the batter hit a line drive at Canady’s face and caused her to black out and go to the emergency room.
Not only does Canady play for Sylvan Hills High School lady bears but she plays for a summer team called Madness which is coached by the assistant coach for SHHS lady bears softball: Jeff Johnson. She plays shorts stop for them as well.
Canady’s biggest influence is UCLA’s shortstop Natasha Wately. She likes her because she works her hardest at what she does. She has proved that if you work as hard as you can you can accomplish anything.
While Canady is good at both offense and defense, her strongest is defense. “I’m better on the field with all the action rather than hitting,” said Canady. Her favorite coach is Coach Tim Marvin, who is her pitching coach. He taught her everything she knows and always pushes her to strive to be the best that she can be. Her favorite teammate is senior Amanda Vander Lugt because she catches for her and pushes her to be better.
Canady is very dedicated to softball. She practices every day for an hour and thirty minutes and on Fridays she has her own independent practice at home for an hour. She plans on going to college for softball and playing for her favorite college team, Georgia Tech University, because of their outstanding coaches.
Watching college softball has taught Canady to keep a great attitude and let your mistakes out and not hold them in all game because then you let them get to your head and effect how you play.
She considers a bad day when she can’t throw, catch, hit, or play as well as she usually does. She struggles with dropping her shoulders when she swings to bat. Her plan is to work on dropping her shoulder this year and sometime she wants to hit a home run.
