Northshore High School’s FIRST Robotics Team does more than just create a robot to perform specific tasks, compete against other school’s rival robots, and win awards. Team Combustion 1912 also seeks to spread science within the community. These efforts do not stop after the school year. Team 1912 Combustion attended the July 4th Heritage Festival at Heritage Park in Slidell. President Christopher Collins, Vice President Andy Zhou, Secretary Sam Holladay, Web Master Historian Rachel Holladay, and Challenge Captain Zachary Collins demonstrated their robot, “Stryker,” to festival goers. The team explained how the robot works and let the crowds interact as they marveled at the robot. “The purpose of FIRST Robotics is to spread science and technology into the community, and we like to do this by demonstrating our robot,” said web master and historian Holladay.
Team Combustion 1912 also went to NASA’s Take Your Kids to Work Day. Christopher Collins, Sam Holladay, and Rachel Holladay attended the event. “Stryker” was once again demoed for children, and the group spoke about the imperativeness of science. Another stop on their community outreach tour was Children’s College Day Care in Slidell. Members present included Raya Islam, Areatha Gou, Hannah Selrrell, and Christopher Collins. “All the kids were amazed with our robot. I love how Team Combustion is not just about winning; we also want to help the community. There are many aspects to robots that people would not expect,” said Raya Islam. Team Combustion 1912 proves itself to be a nonstop organization, working with all the different facets of science and technology.
