Thanksgiving is the time of year associated with lavish meals surrounded by loving family and friends. Unfortunately, many people are not as fortunate. Here at Northshore High School, the students came together to help provide food for the hungry this holiday season, while also enjoying some friendly competition. The annual canned food drive was held on Thursday, November 18 and was extremely successful. With the juniors and seniors tied for the most spirit sticks, the rivalry was intense. However, the seniors stepped up their game and blew away all of the competition. The senior class alone brought in a total of 7,430 canned goods and earned four spirit sticks. The juniors held a distant second with 932 cans, which gave them three more spirit sticks. Surprisingly, the freshmen collected an impressive 593 cans which easily surpassed the sophomore’s 406 cans. They will receive two spirit sticks and one spirit stick, respectively. Regardless of winning or losing, the students should be very proud of their effort, because all of the cans go to an excellent cause. Several members of the student council helped load the cans into the many trucks and trailers that came to deliver the cans to the St. Luke’s Church food bank. Even the organizers were shocked at the support and generosity of the students. “I knew we would have a lot of cans, but I was completely shocked with how many we actually collected,” said senior and student body president, Michelle McElroy. Way to go Panthers!
