On Saturday, April 30th, Relay for Life was held at the Slidell airport and lasted from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00a.m. Northshore High School had their own tent in which they sold candy, face painted, and had a jail n’ bail. There were volunteers from Key Club, Interact, Beta, and the cheerleaders. There were many other activities to entertain the volunteers including sumo wrestling, mechanical bull riding, outdoor laser tag, Just Dance, a dunk tank, a kissing booth, and a giant hamster ball. All of the money donated to these events went to support the American Cancer Society.
Many teams were there to show their support for the fight against cancer. Throughout the night, a member from each team walked around the track in order to keep the relay against cancer going. At 9:00 p.m. ,a luminary ceremony was held. At this time, a slide show played and people remembered family members and friends who had passed away from cancer. Also, a fireworks show illuminated the sky.
In the end, a whopping $306,000 was raised. The volunteers who lasted the whole night took one final victory lap around the track to end the relay. Kristen Van de Voorde a junior at Northshore stated, “It felt nice to help raise money for cancer and I had a lot of fun too!” The event was a huge success and, hopefully, next year will be the same.
