Team 1912 Combustion and the year 2012 have something in common. No, it is not the hundredth anniversary of Northshore’s robotics team, but something much greater: making the unlikely events happen once again. The robotics team went to the Bayou Regionals Competition from Thursday, March 15th to Saturday, March 17th to compete with their robot for the first time this season. Every year, the young hopefuls must construct a robot with different skills and game requirements. This year, the daunting challenge was to program a robot that could play basketball and balance various objects. The team quickly started their annual programing a robot to do just that after kickoff in January. All day Saturday workdays and school nights were filled with thoughts of building the perfect robot throughout the build season, some students went as far as to continue working during Mardi Gras and the day of NHS’ Who’s Who dance. Yet, for the past three years this clan of young engineers, innovators, and team players seem to make it all worth it when they bring home their crown and glory. Team Combustion received the Chairman’s Award, place 8th out of about 60 regional teams, and won their place at the world competition in St. Louis, Missouri. As previously stated, the Chairman’s Award is the zenith of robotics award. Its central focus is not about the best design, or the robot that play the game the best, but about community outreach. Team Combustion presented any essay about their efforts to teach the local community a bit more about math and science. For instance, the team has marched in Slidell parades and mentored younger robotics teams. Every year, FIRST Robotics kicks up their game aiming to get more high school students in the science and technology field, thus the competitions becomes fiercer and the awards gain more prestige. Last year at the world championship, our lucky robotics stars had the chance to meet several celebrities promoting FIRST Robotics. This year the team aims to do better than last year at the World Competition to continue their steady climb up the robotics ladder.
