Consider China, Smith says

Talk about an opportunity.
You can become a part of creating a video documentary…showcasing the relationships that are created when students from two different countries share eight weeks in each other’s country---learning what it means to be Chinese…what it means to be American!
Becoming a BCPS Student Ambassador to China is unique.  Students spend eight weeks living in a community that will become a second home; a second family.  After the third week in Xi’an, the feeling of being a tourist disappears. Suddenly, you are a member of the community.  Even if you have never learned to speak Chinese, you will find yourself using the language to buy food in a local market or barter over the price of jade bracelet.  You become the American cousin and the American neighbor. You are a joyous curiosity for many people who have never seen an American.  For them, you represent the energy and ingenuity that they so value in our country. They will want to shake your hand and photograph you because you are a connection to the outside.  Although you will tour the modern streets of Beijing, climb the ephemeral mountain peaks in Xi’an, and visit one of the greatest archeological finds: the Terracotta Warriors, you will also find a home in a country half-way across the world…
I urge all Dulaney students to seriously contemplate participating in the DHS-Baltimore County Public Schools China Exchange Program this year. Applications are being accepted through Oct.  Information is available in the school library.
