At-a-glance

The Vending Machine Crunch

Fast food is seen as a real problem for the majority of people but it seems lately that it has been focused on teenagers. Although we have junk food and fast food all around us it is our own personal choice whether or not to eat the bad food. For Nauset Regional High School students, we have the option of healthy foods vs. unhealthy foods in the vending machines.  It isn’t that the machines only offer candy and chips, they have granola bars and there is also a fruit stand in the lobby during lunches. The candy and chips in the vending machines are served in small portions and moderation, therefore it really not a bad thing. These vending machines give so much money to the classes to help with graduation and prom for their senior year and other events. Although other fundraising can be done, this form has been the most successful for all of the classes over the years. As long as students are given the option of both foods there will be an increase of money for the classes and health along with obesity won’t need to stay a huge concern. Besides, there is not an excessive amount of junk food being served at the school, it really doesn’t have that great of an impact on weight gain for the student population here.

Vending machines are good for schools for a few reasons. They provide the school with their own personal fundraiser all throughout the year. Having them around campus raises money for all of the classes at the high school. They also make it very convenient for students who don’t want to stand in a long lunch line just for a water bottle. There is also a good variety of snacks and drinks to choose from. Having these machines gives the students a choice of basically anything they could possibly want to have for a cheap price, which causes more attraction of students and money in the long run.

Although many adults and some students are against the vending machines and believe that they are making our generation gain unwanted weight, that is not true. The school has begun to serve whole grain pasta, more fruits, salads, yogurts, and wheat bread instead of white. This is definitely helping students eat healthier. Students are apt to go and buy a snack after lunch but as long as their meal is well balanced there really shouldn’t be an issue.  As long as students are given the option of healthier foods they will buy those and also a snack after which will help out their class and obesity will not be an issue.
