Onstage, the lights come up, the main character in the play steps out to deliver their lines and the audience sits back to watch a theatrical production that seems to go quietly, smoothly and with uninterrupted ease.

What the audience doesn't see is backstage, which is a beehive of frantic activity.

"His mic is full of static," whispers one of the backstage crew, communicating this to the control booth through his headset. "Also, turn down light number eleven and turn up spotlight three."

When that scene is over people rush to trade microphones from one performer to another before the blackout.

This hectic activity didn't just begin the night of the performance, it's been going on for a while. And so it is with many different activities.

No basketball game, no drill team competition and no band concert goes on without planning and people on the sideline arranging everything doing what needs to get done.

Sports coaches put in countless hours with their teams to get them ready for their games, not to mention arranging for game times, buses, and looking after each team member's grades and behavior.

These background people have proven themselves to be very necessary to whatever they are helping with, as said by Bette Midler, "You are the wind beneath my wings." This could be applied to all sideline helpers.

So the next time you attend any activity , competition or game you might try to acknowledge those who made it all possible.
