San Diego SCPA alumnus Chaz Cabrera and current San Diego SCPA students Hiram Garza, John Avery, Tyler Kruetel, Josh Vasquez, Marc Encabo, were voted the "Best Teen Band in the USA" and have won an invitation to headline at the Original School Jam performance in Frankfurt, Germany. On January 21, 2012 Jazz Avenue earned top honors at School Jam USA- a nationwide contest showcasing original music written by alumnus Chaz Cabrera and San Diego SCPA junior Josh Vasquez. "I was nervous because I didn't know if anyone would like our sound," said Vasquez whose nerves were later eased after being recognized for "Best Guitar" by the judges. The experience didn't end in Anaheim. On March 20, Jazz Avenue will be departing for Frankhurt, Germany where they will stay until March 25. "We will be opening for Germany's School Jam," said senior Marc Encabo. School Jam USA funded the airfare, the hotel, and $250 for each student to use accordingly throughout their trip. School Jam USA was also able to fund 1 parent chaperone, but the parents of the other musicians and SDSCPA music director Tamara Paige are anxious to join the students overseas as well. Jazz Avenue will be using the opportunity to play more original compositions for their upcoming audience in Germany. "I'm most excited to just be able to play in another country," said Encabo.
