It’s that time of year again: spring time. Which means prom is rapidly approaching. Girls are head over heals because this date is a night that they have been eagerly awaiting since they knew what prom was. Whether it is finding the right date or the right dress, prom month is a busy time for both the ladies and the guys. Dresses, tuxedos, corsages, and the dinner before are all part of the prom experience. This years theme is “A Tale as Old as Time,” from the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

“You know when little girls play dress up? Well they are really practicing for their high school prom,” one girl jokingly says about all the trouble girls go through when prom rolls around. Boys also have to get ready for this special occasion; they buy the tickets, the corsage, the dinner, and frequently a few side items. “I am so excited for this year’s prom,” one girl says, “I can’t wait to see the place it is being held at and see how dressed up every one is.” As for the guys, well there is a lot of hard work on their part too. “I’m nervous about asking the girl to prom,” one guy says. Most guys will think up a unique way to ask the girl such as posters around the school, going into their class and asking, asking over the intercom, decorating their cars, and of course, balloons and flowers are always used to win the lady’s heart.

This year’s theme comes from a fairy tale that many of us are familiar with, Beauty and the Beast. The classic story of how a man, turned into a beast because of his selfish ways, falls in love with a girl, who in the end breaks the spell. When asked what she thought of this years theme one student replied, “I think it is very sweet and very romantic!” Another student said, “I’m very excited to see how decorated the place will be and I think it will turn out really beautiful with everyone dressed up.”

The tickets start at $50 and the price will go up every week until prom and then at the door the tickets will be $70 dollars. Some students think the prices are a little to high considering the economic state we are in now. One student remarked, “The prices are just too high for me otherwise I would go. Because I would have to pay for the tickets, the tux, the girls dress, the dinner, flowers, corsage, and more and that’s too expensive and way over 100 bucks.” Another student said, “If you don’t have a job then you aren’t going to be able to go because of the really high prices ad you cant just ask you parents to hand out 200 bucks to you for one night.” But many other students think lightly about the high price, “It is going to be the night of our lives so I think it is worth spending extra for,” one says. Another remarked, “Prom only comes once in our lives and its part of the high school experience so it is worth it.”

Dresses and tuxedos sum up the whole prom preparations and its one of the top priorities of a girl when preparing for this important date. During first and second lunch a prom fashion show was held to show off a beautiful variety of dresses for the ladies and a dashing selection of suites for the guys. The ladies and gents showed off their stylish gowns and tuxes on the cat walk and each added a bit of personality to their “act.” The girls’ choices in dresses matched their personalities as well as their partners’ suites!

Whether it is finding the right dress or the right date, the students at Higley will be busy with preparations for prom. All attending all overly excited for the upcoming date and can hardly wait to show off their stylish outfits and have an unforgettable night with their date or even just their friends. Prom is all part of the high school experience and you only get the chance once, so let this year be as good as a “tale as old as time.”
