Beatrix Potter, in the Tale of Flopsy Bunny’s Rights, said that the effects of eating too much lettuce is soporific. What does soporific mean?
Can you answer that? Well, a select group of high school students can. They are Honor Society students who have competed in a recent honor bowl, which had this question. By the way, if you were wondering what soporific means, it’s causing sleep.
“It’s (the Honor Bowl) fun,” said senior Taylor Motta. “It’s like being on Fairhaven High's version of Jeopardy.”
The Honor Bowls are set up like a Jeopardy game. Each school competes in four matches a year. The match consists of three rounds with four students on a team. The rounds are 30 minutes. The students have 10 seconds to ring the buzzer. The team with the most points wins the round
FHS defeated Case and New Bedford Voc-Tech in an Honor Bowl on Nov. 4. The game was held at Fairhaven High School. Also, FHS had defeated Wareham and lost to Bourne in Wareham on Dec 9.
The selected students who are competing in the honor bowls this year are Alexander Borges, Andrew DaCunha, Timothy DesRoches, Kaitlynn Ferreira, Lauren Lopes, Taylor Motta, Rose Oliva, Kayla Cabral, Allison Johansen, and Amanda Meehan.
“ I think we have really smart kids,” said Honor Society Advisor Lorraine Fernandes, “and it’s good to show their abilities and talents through the Honor Bowl.”
The next Honor Bowl will be against Seekonk and ORR in Seekonk in March.
