Ron and Carren Clem, authors of Loss of Innocence, shared an 80-minute version of their struggle with drugs in two assemblies for students on Jan. 21 as part of a documentary.
Circleville High School is the only “school that we’ve chosen to come and just get a glimpse of the interaction between the Clems and the students,” said Deb Gregory, executive producer of the documentary whose working title is “Saving Carren.”
“I think that one of the things we were looking for was a school in an area that’s at high-risk,” Gregory said, “and definitely Circleville fits that classic model.”
Ron, father of recovering meth addict Carren, began the assembly with an overview of their struggle through the point at which he realized Carren had been raped using rohypnol, a date-rape drug, and then Carren took the stage.
The transition between the two speakers was powerful, Spanish teacher Allison Guseman said.
Junior Kelly Cain and a group of other students approached Carren Clem at the end of the presentation.
Cain called the assembly “the best one that we’ve ever had.”
She said their story was “really rough but it probably related to a lot of people here.”
Cain appreciated the Clems’ honesty and sincerity, a view that other students and teachers echoed.
During the last part of the presentation, Ron gave an overview of meth’s addictive nature. He said meth provided a high 10 times greater than the greatest pleasure, but the lows were equally as intense.
The Clems decided to do the documentary to preserve their story and to reach a larger audience.
“We couldn’t reach everybody,” Ron said.
Carren, 25, feels as though her story will be less impactful as she ages.
“As I get older, we want our message to still come out to people,” Carren said. “I think my time for being able to capture the audience is coming to an end.”
The Clems said during the presentation that they were not there to preach. They hoped their story would help others make better decisions.
“They want a chance to give students solid information not only about the medical side to methamphetamine and drugs but also just the personal story that kids can relate to,” Gregory said.
The documentary is expected to be complete “before the summer of 2009,” according to Gregory.
Interviews with the Clems, some of the locations at which key events in their lives happened, and graphic animations will be incorporated to tell their story in the documentary.
Although the method of distribution has not been decided, the goal is to have a copy of the DVD in every high school in the country, Gregory said.
