On the day that love is most treasured, it is important to remember those who share their love with people across the community every day.
Everyone has their own way of sharing with others that they care about the world. Senior Andrea Turner helps make a difference for those around her by helping young children at Atwater Elementary. She reads or plays games with them on Mondays and Wednesdays in cooperation she knows there. Turner also likes to go on mission trips with Crossroads Church. This summer, Andrea helped reconstruct old houses in Cleveland along with other members of her church. “I basically carried out trash of abandoned homes,” Turner said. Turner is looking forward to doing a similar thing in Circleville this summer, where she and her church will be building a house for a person in need.
In the future, Turner seeks to help more kids by becoming a teacher. She plans to attend Ausbury College in Kentucky to major in early childhood education or special needs education. “I want to make a difference in the lives of kids that other people don’t invest enough time in.”
Junior Nina Porter lends a hand to those in poverty by preparing food at the soup kitchen with a grounp from St. Josephs Church and tutoring tutors math at the middle school. She goes to the middle school every Thursday during her third period study hall. Porter also helps out elderly people from her church with odd jobs. “It makes me feel good because I know I helped someone out who really needs it,” she said. Porter experienced one of her most gratifying moments after cleaning up an elderly lady’s house after one of the big storms last year. Although she had a relatively simple job of picking up limbs that had broken off trees, she made the lady feel very special. “She was just so grateful,” Porter said.
Turner and Porter aren’t the only ones that enjoy volunteering. Sophomore Macie Sawyer not only helps the people around her, but also takes little steps toward saving the planet. Together with her 4-H club, Kountry Kids, Sawyer cleans Deer Creek Park and Ted Lewis Park.
Sawyer shared the holiday spirit this winter by helping families pick out and wrap gifts through the Toys for Tots program. “I just like helping out people,” Sawyer said.
In the future, Sawyer is considering becoming an animal caretaker, for she loves handling animals. Preferably, she would like to work in and animal shelter.
“I want to make sure the animals are safe and loved,” Sawyer said.
