Marines at Standley

The Marines stand in order while the band comes in playing music. The band starts playing and the choir sings the Marine Hymn. At the same time, students are gathering around in the lunch area of the school. The Marines are on the left, the band is in the middle and the choir is on the right. After the choir sings and the band plays, the head Marine yells at the other Marines to do ten pushups.  Then ten of an exercise with elbows to knee and lastly ten three core push-ups. We cheered for our school and the Marines yelled “Hoorah!”  After that they stood straight and still like they were in a trance until the head Marine told them to relax.

To help them train, the Marines do circuits just like we do in P.E. except they are far more intense. The Marines that came to our school were part of this program called the SMP or Single Marine Program. This program has volunteer Marines come to schools to have a good time and exercise with the students. The SMP only comes to a few schools each year.  Marines like Tannin Hills , Lance Coprol say that they want to be like normal people and have fun while exercising with us.

Most of the Marines have come from Afghanistan and all have different jobs to help them with this job. To be a Marine you must first graduate from high school and then go through a screening. Finally, you will go to boot camp and become a Marine.

The morning was just a taste of what we would do in P.E.  There were a few different sections that we did with the Marines. These included tug-o-war, moving a tire and side stepping with a sand bag. Another one you had to crawl across the floor and get into a sack and then hop to where you get to the ladders and do high knees.  Lastly we threw a ball into a circled area and if you didn’t complete the task you had to do ten push-ups.

In conclusion the whole school did a lot of running, sit-ups and push-ups. It was nice to have the marines over to do P.E with us. Let’s hope they come again to Standley, and do P.E. with us again.
