Not many things are made with left handed people in mind these days, especially in America.
Everything from a computer mouse to a pair of scissors is made to fit the right hand.
So as I began to look into buying a car with the steering wheel on the right side, I did not think I would have a problem.
   But I was wrong.
Other than a few ex-military vehicles and old postal vans, there are no cars in the United States that have steering wheels on the right side of the car, at least legally.
A few rebels have brought right-hand drive Japanese exotics, like the Nissan Skyline, into the Untied States, and about 30 years ago, a few British Mini Coopers were imported. But other than that there are not any.
So my hope of having a car that was designed for left handed people like myself was temporarily shot, until I thought of importing a new car from over seas.
Sounds simple, but again, it isn’t.
The official United States policy is that if a car, or any car that is similar to it, is offered within the United States, its right hand drive version cannot be imported.
Their reasoning is almost as ridiculous as the rule itself.
The government claims that right hand drive cars are not designed for American streets, and more importantly, they are not as safe.
   I disagree with both.
Anyone who has parallel parked on a busy two way street would love to be able to get out of their car on the right side. It might sound weird but it makes more sense.
And anyone who considers themselves left handed would probably prefer shifting with their left hand, but who cares about that?
In terms of safety, my only response to their claim is simple:
   What?
As far as I can tell, there is nothing different in the general safety design of any car, regardless of which side the steering wheel is on.
But I cannot change the ignorant laws that are currently in place, so as of now I have come to accept the reality that I will probably never own a right hand drive car.
I do not like it, but I do not think that anything will change anytime soon.
