Aid For Haiti

The small island of Haiti is now one of the most well known islands of the world due to the massive, 9.1 earthquake that occurred this August. Destroying many small towns and cities, the earthquake is costing sums that Haiti is very much unable to offer. However, countries all over the world have decided to help, including the United States.  

Empire High School, in Vail, Arizona offered to show their support in a big way by collecting money in which 100% of the proceeds go to Haiti relief.

“I know it was a big disaster. They were unprepared and lost money that they didn't have in the first place.” Mr. Schmidt, the Empire Student Council teacher, stated about the previous earthquake that took much of the money Haiti never had in the first place.

Haiti spent millions of dollars on proper medicine and care for the people in the earthquake, money that was very thankfully offered and taken from other countries, especially the U.S.

“I think it has gotten better because I don't think it could've gotten any worse.” Mr. Schmidt said upon being asked whether the situation has gotten any better or not.

Since August of 2010, Haiti has been dealing with a “cholera outbreak”. Cholera is a serious infectious disease that is very contagious. It affects the intestinal system of the body. Without immediate medical treatment, cholera may result in death within four to twelve hours after symptoms begin. Due to a large loss of body fluids, cholera is gruesome in the way that it leaves survivors in their physical appearance, as well as in the biological toll it takes on the body.

Mr. Schmidt was asked whether anyone would help, or want to help with the cause, his response being, “yeah. I think there's a lot of groups in need and it's very difficult to help a lot of people when you're only one person.” There are always people in need and being willing to give a little will get every one a little further in the world.
