Taylor High School seniors have a wide variety of emotion concerning life after graduation. There is a lot of excitement and frustration dealing with that little disorder called “Senioritis,” finishing up last minute requirements, and actually knowing for sure that they are going to be graduating and out of high school for good. How do they feel about all of this? What are their plans? It’s something that only happens once, but the majority of the seniors are making the best of it. Other seniors, however, know they still have things that need to get done before they graduate. What are those things?
Senioritis has definitely kicked in for some students who get agitated at being in school, or sitting in a desk for too long. They just want to be out of high school and move on to the next step in life. After asking some Taylor High School seniors, their opinions were clear as to how eager they are to get out of school, and not have to worry about school work, or at least not worry about it until they start up college. One Taylor High school senior said, “I have senioritis and I’m excited for graduation, but I’m upset that I have to leave people behind. After graduation I plan on going to NKU for broadcasting journalism.” This is the feelings of many other students: they want to leave, and at the same time they don’t.
Everyone, even including students in other grades, is just excited for the end of the year. Things always change year round, and once a new school year begins, and when all the seniors from the previous year are gone, things are much different and yet Taylor is still the same as it has always been. It’s the time in May though where seniors are full of emotion dealing with how things will be after high school is over for them. But do some people forget about the fact they won’t be back to Taylor High School the next year? Some students find it very strange that this is actually their last year, and college will be the next big thing coming. It probably seemed like just yesterday they were freshmen walking down the unfamiliar halls of the school.
The question is, what all do seniors have to get done and finish up before they can graduate or move on to college? Major stresses, or just general tasks, include getting the cap and gown for graduation, choosing a college to go to, scholarships, maintaining high enough grades, and most importantly making sure they have fees wavered and ACT’s or SAT’s taken care of so they are able to get a high school diploma. This can get bothersome but with the help of parents, teachers, and people at Taylor, this can be accomplished with hard with and some time.
It’s safe to say that feelings about leaving THS are mixed and bittersweet. But, it’s a milestone, a turning point, a right of passage, and part of life to graduate high school. It’s also safe to say the THS seniors are making the best of it.
