Every year, every school has the most exciting event in spring, around the time of May or June that many people will always remember, and prepare for. Prom is as exciting as any school gathering can get. Students go out to find a fancy dress or a tuxedo and dress up for a night out. There is always excitement: dancing, music, the after party, and as always, the announcing of the prom queen and king.

Yet every school does something different, even though many do similar activities. At Taylor High School, as well as other schools around the U.S., there is a fun way for seniors to get scholarships and for all students to have fun while doing so. The project is called Stuck at Prom, where any student or senior going to prom can get involved and sign up. It offers a scholarship of $3000 to college. This may not seem like a whole lot, but any money for college is always a help and a start for students who are graduating.

It’s a project that involves student creativity, a theme, and participation to prom. The idea is for students to make duct tape prom dresses, and have a common theme with the tuxedo and the dress itself. The participants can only use duct tape of different colors to create this, and even though a regular dress can be underneath, the idea is for only duct tape to be seen. But how did this idea get brought up to Taylor?

Many organizations nation-wide are responsible for giving out different types of scholarships, and Taylor High School thought it would be a good idea to get involved with one of them. The staff school board agreed that with using student creativity, and part of this type of organization, this would be a great choice to involve seniors, students, and help them with funding for college. It also is a great way to show how you don’t have to spend a lot of money on prom to have a good time.

As for the participants, some are working very hard to get things done with their dresses and tuxedos for the project. THS senior Kassi Bailey, and former Taylor student Kiri Bailey, are both working on duct tape prom dresses for prom night.

After asking Kassi Bailey why she decided to take on this project, she said, “I saw it online and it was a challenge I wanted to pursue.” Her sister Kiri is no longer a student of Taylor High School but said that she wanted to be involved in this project as well.

She states, “My sister needed a pair for this project and chose me.” They are still currently working on the dresses and have to have them completed by May 2nd, just in time for prom.

Not only is this an interesting idea for a scholarship, but they see it as fun and enjoyment as well. When they were asked what the best part about this way, Kassi replied, “The creativity involved as well as the development of the dresses”, and Kiri said “the design,” was the best part of the dresses and entire project.

As fun and rewarding as the duct tape prom dresses may be, there are always a few struggles dealing with it. Firstly, if people think about making a whole dress and tuxedo out of duct tape, it seems to be very challenging, and it is. Kassi said, “It was challenging to get the duct tape to move with my form.” And as for Kiri, it is tough “getting it together and for the time restraints.”

Once they are completed with the assignment of putting everything together, it will be more rewarding than ever. Even students who don’t get a scholarship can see how fun it can be to do something unique and inexpensive for prom. At THS, and around the country, people are joining in at putting there creative talents out there.

This just makes another year where Taylor High School has done what they’re good at: getting involved.
