Early Saturday morning one of the largest earthquakes in recent history hit Chile, leaving millions displaced and hundreds dead. This is not the first time Chile has experienced such a high magnitude quake. In 1960, the largest earthquake since 1900 at 9.5 magnitude hit Chile, which took years to rebuild.
The quake's epicenter was 200 miles southwest of Chile's capital city Santiago, which is also its most populated area. The Maule region recorded the most deaths with 541 by Sunday night. Concepcion, one of the most populated areas in Chile, has a curfew taking place with hopes to stop looting and crime, which is a big problem in times of crisis.
Soon after the quake a tsunami warning was sent throughout the Pacific, including Hawaii, but several hours later the waves crossed the islands without causing any damage. Much of the island was shut down all weekend preparing for the worst.
The Chilean earthquake was 700 times stronger than the one that struck Haiti in January, but far less deadly as Chile is far more prepared and has infinte more resources available. The US stands by ready to give aid once the airports open up again.
