On May 11, 2010 the AACS golf team traveled to the Cardinal Gibbons golf course to compete for the semi-final playoff spot. The weather was in the low 50s, and heavy rain fall began before the Eagles left. Although it was cold, windy, and rainy, the match went on as scheduled.
Before the match, the starting six felt the pressure of the playoffs on their shoulders, and realized that they could not afford a lose if they wanted to continue on the road to the championship. The match begins, with senior Ryan Hampton and junior Ryan Slenk in the first group, junior Nicholas Mumma and senior Jake Yaklin in the second group, and sophomore Peter Kim and junior Jake Miller in the third group. The match remained in high tensions throughout the entire match, as the score looked about even in each group. It all came down to the final hole in each group, and unfortunately AACS was unable to overcome the challenge.
The final score was AACS 9 ½ to Cardinal Gibbons 11 ½. Looking back on the match, senior Ryan Hampton said “we completed very well as a team,” stating that “Cardinal Gibbons avoided a upset lost only by a couple missed putts here and there from the AACS golf team."
This is Coach Greg Whitley’s final year as the golf coach, and although he would have liked to make it to the championship match this year, he was very proud of the talent, hard work, and dedication he saw from the AACS Eagles team this season.
