The new NHS officers answer questions at a recent meeting. - Chelsea Chamberlain

Next week, 64 new members
will be inducted into the
Dwight B. Waldo chapter of
the National Honor Society.
These students were selected for
membership based on their areas
of excellence in the four pillars
that make up the values of NHS
which include scholarship, leadership,
character, and service.
To be considered, students
must first have a grade point
average of 3.5 or above, which
satisfies the scholarship pillar. If
a student meets the scholarship
requirement, they are invited
to fill out an application which
will further evaluate them in the
remaining areas of character,
service, and leadership.
The members of NHS are
required to have 10 service
hours each year, and there is no
lack of opportunities to fulfill
that requirement. Every year,
members participate in Raken-
Run, which is as simple as it
sounds. Members run to houses
in the community and rake up
leaves for those who are unable
to do it themselves. NHS
member Cameron Monroe ‘12,
says Rake-n-Run is her favorite
service activity “The people are
so grateful that we come around
and help them, its fun to see
how happy they are when their
yard is cleaned up” she said.
Another service project that
is being considered for this year
is a senior prom, and not the
kind you might be thinking of.
This would be a prom for senior
citizens.
“This is the best idea ever,”
says Chloe Thiel ‘12. “Just
think of all the old ladies getting
dressed up to go to a dance
with their husbands. So cute”.
Involved in not just service
projects, NHS also does multiple
fundraisers each year, with
the profits going to charity. In
the past they have had hat and
hoodie days, a Valentine’s day
Crush pop sale, a candy cane
sale, and a compatibility matching
quiz. The money raised at
all the fundraisers is combined
and donated to a charity of the
members’ choosing. Last year,
the organization donated large
sums of money to Sylvia’s Place
and Invisible Children.
Treasurer Lauren Saar ‘12
says, “Donating the money is awesome, it’s
something that is really doing good for our
community.”
The new members will be inducted into
the National Honor Society on November
9.
