GCS is offering two new elective classes this semester, Art and Pottery, which is taught by Mrs. Rutherford, and Chorus taught by Mrs. Shepherd.
The Art and Pottery class takes place in the Science lab and Chorus takes place in the new music room beside the Writing and Literature classroom.
Mrs. Shepherd’s class will be performing February 9, and will be putting on an Easter program.
Even though school has only been in session one week and two days, the students are already learning many lessons.
“I’ve learned how to harmonize with people, and I’ve learned how to blend my voice with others,” said Sarah Booraem, a ninth grade Chorus class member.
“We’re [the class] learning four pieces and focusing on ear training, matching pitches, tone, blending, and solfege,” added Mrs. Shepherd.
“They are learning hatching, crosshatching, shading, perspective, and a brief overview of Art History,” said Mrs. Rutherford about her Art and Pottery class.
Each teacher has specific goals they would like to accomplish in their class. Mrs. Shepherd said her goal for her class is to make her students better singers. She also said her ultimate goal is to make the students love singing.
Mrs. Rutherford said her goal for her class is to help the students to realize their artistic abilities are not limited, and anyone can draw.
Both teachers said they have special activities planned for their classes.
“When we start pottery, we will take a trip to Edgefield to Piedmont Technical College to get a pottery certificate,” said Mrs. Rutherford.
Mrs. Shepherd said that she would always love to have new members, and Mrs. Rutherford said that she thinks her students will become outstanding in their artistic ability. Mrs. Rutherford also said that she enjoys teaching her class.
