CBS’s "Survivor: Nicaragua" Worth Watching on Wednesday Night

The CBS hit show Survivor is back on TV, premiering for its 21st season on Wednesday, September 15.

The biggest change for the newest season is that Survivor: Nicaragua airs on Wednesday nights at 8/7c, instead of the Thursday night time slot that has been typical in years past. However, don’t let the time change fool you, since the show is still the same, including the premise. Simply take twenty Americans and put them in teams (or “tribes”) to survive in the elements, all while individually competing for the one million dollar prize and title of “Sole Survivor”.

This season, the tribes are divided in an unconventional way: by age. While in years past, the teams may have been divided by race and “good versus evil”, Survivor: Nicaragua puts young (under 30) and old (over 40) on two separate tribes, La Flor and Espada respectively. I personally am interested in how this will affect game play. It’s not like anyone on La Flor can use the vote-off-the-older-tribe member-first card anymore.

However, it’s not just the tribe setup that makes the show worth watching. Just like in previous shows, Survivor: Nicaragua includes an eclectic group of contestants. The newest season even includes former Super Bowl-winning head coach and Espada tribe member Jimmy Johnson, who said in the season premiere, “I’m sixty-six years old and I’ve won two collegiate national championships.  I won two Super Bowls.   What could top it off better than to win Survivor?”

Other contestants this season include Espada tribe member Jane Bright, who successfully created fire in the season premiere without using flint, and La Flor tribe member Kelly Bruno, who is competing with a prosthetic leg.

Which contestant will “outwit, outlast, and outplay” on Survivor: Nicaragua? It is still too early to tell, but I can guarantee that the reality show has successfully managed to keep season 21 fresh and interesting, and is definitely worth the space on your TiVo.
