With 10 Oscar nominations, six Critics’ Choice Award nominations, and numerous other esteemed film awards, "Slumdog Millionaire" may be one of the best movies of the past year.Eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik, played by British actor Dev Patel, endures a rough life in the slums of Mumbai. He finally seems to be in luck when he is one question away from winning the grand prize on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" Suspected of cheating, officials harshly interrogate him, and Jamal explains how his life as a "slumdog" has given him all the answers. As the main character flashes back through his traumatic childhood, viewers get a powerful image of crime and poverty in the streets of an undeveloped country. Directors Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan did a phenomenal job with portraying this heart-wrenching story. Scenes bring joy, anger, sympathy, and shock, all without being too overwhelming. The circumstances of Jamal’s life may often seem grim, but the plot continues to leave viewers with hope. For those in search of a poignant love story, "Slumdog Millionaire" also offers a poignant, romantic plotline. The twists and turns in the relationship between Jamal and Latika, played by former model Freida Pinto, keep movie-goers on the edge of their seat. Even to the world’s most adamant cynic, this movie comes close to definitively affirming the belief in fate and destiny. There’s also a ton of thrill and excitement throughout the scenes of the movie. As Jamal encounters violence, strife, and gangs in the slums, he ends up in suspenseful situations, relying on his own street smarts for survival. The various action scenes leave little room to be bored throughout the film. A particularly unique characteristic to "Slumdog Millionaire" is its brilliant soundtrack. Much of it is composed by A. R. Rahman. The music definitely sets the tone for the movie, with its original beats and funky, upbeat rhythms. The sounds appropriately complement the electrifying spirit of the movie. M.I.A. also contributed several songs to the soundtrack. While most critics around the world enjoyed the movie, viewers may want to keep in mind it was rated-R for violence and language. The disturbing graphic images in "Slumdog Millionaire" may be too much to handle for faint-hearted movie fans. Overall, it’s no wonder that this film was so widely praised internationally. "Slumdog Millionaire" takes viewers on a ride through tragedy, friendship, romance, and hope. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars(Some information courtesy of imdb.com and radiosargam.com)
