The slapping of rifles, whipping of flags, and rush of bright colors and intricate props have returned to the gymnasium as the Jonathan Law Winterguard is back in competition.
The Winterguard at Law has competed for almost a decade in the Musical Arts Conference and continue to wow audiences with their 2009 show, "Enchanted Forest."
The 14 girls that make up the guard return as 2008 Scholastic A Champions and fight to defend their title again this season.
The guard is led by out-of-school coach Pam Rossman. Other directors include Law alumni Shannon Spencer and Amanda Saunders.
Guard captains and seniors Rachelle M. and Casey L., along with lieutenants and juniors Ava R. and Erica G. say they are very excited for their 2009 season.
"I’m looking forward to competing again this season," said Rachelle M. "All of our members have experience, so we don’t have to start from scratch."
Winterguard consists of throwing and manipulating rifles, sabers, flags and other additional props. It is a combination of dance and baton twirling with music from different soundtracks and composers.
The guards do their routines and are then judged in four different categories: equipment, movement, ensemble, and two categories of general effect.
"The judges are no joke," said Rachelle M. "They can be really harsh sometimes." The combined use of dance, performance, and intricate formations make color guard most commonly called, "The Sport of the Arts."
The Law Winterguard will be attending nine competitions from the beginning of January all the way until the end of March. They will even be hosting their own show at Jonathan Law on Saturday, March 21, the last competition before championships.
"It’s a great way to meet new people," said Casey L. "We travel all over New England so you meet a lot of people you have something in common with."
On top of the high school girls in the guard, the Winterguard also consists of four middle school children, one from Harborside Middle School and three from West Shore Middle School.
"There all really talented and like to do it," said Casey L. "It also keeps the older kids in line to be good role models."
Over the last few years, the Winterguard has improved dramatically, and has moved up two classes because of their skill and their competition results. They have even won best guard numerous times during Law’s marching band season.
The Winterguard is a talented group of girls that hope to continue on their winning streak.
