It’s time for school once again at Jonathan Law, as the students and staff come rolling through the doors. Teachers are satisfied with returning to work, and students are secretly content with being back in school and reconnecting with all of their friends.
For seniors, this is the fourth and hopefully final year of high school. It is the decisions that seniors make this year that impact the rest of our lives. While the pressure of college searching and graduating may be overwhelming, this is truly a year to embrace and enjoy. It is one seniors will look back on 30 years down the road and speak about as "the good times".
While now the seniors may simply want to get out, they will miss every detail of attending Jonathan Law. This includes Mr. Beler’s loud voice boasting either down the halls or through the intercom speakers. This includes Wayne, the cafeteria cleaning assistant, throwing away our full lunch bag, sometimes without us having even opened it. We love him anyways. This includes football games, and the atmosphere of excitement at Law field on those Friday nights in the fall. This includes watching our volleyball team dominate year after year, and being thankful for the privilege of cheering for a true championship team. Senior year only comes once, and is not to be taken for granted. No more can we simply wake up late, throw on sweats, and think I just want to get through this day. Instead, we must make every day count. We all need to come to school each day as if it’s our last. Pretty soon, in fact, it will be.
Freshmen, on the other hand, are in a completely different boat. As they enter high school, with their wide eyes and even wider backpacks, they must learn the ropes of Jonathan Law. Here’s a heads up: walk through the door on the right. If there is anything that makes an upperclassman angry, it’s the congestion in the proximity of the stairwell. More often than not, this is due to a stray freshman walking aimlessly through the wrong doors. Other than that, Jonathan Law is known for giving warm welcomes to the incoming students. If I could give an underclassmen one tip, it would be to get involved. High school only comes around once, and I urge students to take advantage of this any time they can. There truly is something for everyone. You can find your niche in athletics, music, or one of the many other groups affiliated with Law. For everyone in between, I insist that you live this year to the fullest. You need to succeed in the classroom, and to not get lazy. If you put in the work, you will notice the benefits senior year as you apply to college or seek a post-grad occupation. If everyone maintains the right attitude, we can all look forward to an excellent year at Jonathan Law High School.
