The Spring Dance May 4 will feature a first-ever recycling redemption center, where students can trade recyclables for tickets good for refreshments.
Eco Club is asking students to bring paper, aluminum and plastic. Club members and volunteers will be minding bins for sorting the donations, which can also include chip bags.
In support of a bill that would allow plastics to be turned into recycling centers for a small refund, students are urged to bring plastic bottles to a mock redemption center at the dance. A "refund" ticket will be given to donors, who then can use the tickets to purchase a drink or a snack. Students at the dance should look for the redemption center in the back of the room.
Eco Club will be accepting any plastic, aluminum, or glass beverage bottles. They will not take anything that had milk in it previously but things such as glass bottles, Gatorade or soda bottles, or water bottles will be accepted.
Eco Club will receive five cents for every bottle turned in, and they will use the money they earn to plant trees around the campus.
Mrs. Tiffany Garcia, science teacher and Eco Club sponsor said she “hopes if there are centers for plastic recycling then people will bring in their plastics instead of just throwing them away. So much plastic is going into landfills and building up so we need an alternate choice.”
