The Advanced Functions and Modeling Class, taught by Mrs. Cynthia Ramsey, is holding a Carnival for the Special Education Class to kick-off Spring Break. Their current unit in the class is dealing with probability, so Mrs. Ramsey decided to have her students create games for a Carnival. The students have to figure out the probability of winning the game. The official Carnival games will be held on Thursday, April 1st and prizes will be given.
One of the games that will be played is a ring toss game. The students have five bottles and three rings; you must stand a certain distance away from the bottles and toss the rings onto them. If you are able to ring one of the bottles, you win a prize. One bottle is colored a different color and is worth a better prize. Student Audy Peoples predicts that the ring toss will be a favorite. “I think the kids will really enjoy the games. The ring toss will be a big hit!” said Peoples.
Another game that the students created is one where you must toss a coin onto a plate. There are five big plates and four smaller ones. The smaller plates are worth a better prize. “The game will be hard, but not impossible. The coins often bounce off of the plates, even with the perfect throw,” said Peoples. “I am very excited to see the kids actually play the games.”
According to the students in Mrs. Ramsey’s class, they have had a great time researching, creating and decorating the games. The challenging assignment was a nice break from all of the regular paperwork in a Mathematics Class. Students working the Carnival and participating anticipate it to be a very fun-filled day.
