This year, the science department not only got a new astronomy teacher, but also, with a little help, a new telescope. New Teacher Dan Ingersoll had applied for a grant to be able to purchase the telescope, but for various reasons, did not receive the grant. So, Principal Berry provided the funding to purchase it.
When asked about how she felt about the new addition, Senior Katie Kammerer appreciates the new telescope at school. “It’s pretty awesome actually. It gives students a chance to actually look at real stars and planets instead of just pictures in books.”
The science department hopes to be able to explore the skies and, not only teach, but learn with the students.
Another senior, Andy Bonn, was very amazed at what you could see with the telescope. “It’s freakin’ awesome. Enough said. It’s not just a basic, everyday, telescope on a tripod, but a large, much more professional telescope," Bonn indicated.
According to Ingersoll, this new telescope will offer students great opportunities to see objects in the sky that, they would not have been able to before. It takes learning to a completely different level and will hopefully inspire more interest in astronomy.
