Badminton, a sport which requires stamina, agility, strength, and precision, was introduced to the Olympics in 1992. In that same year many members of the current senior class were born. Thus it was very appropriate that this past semester two senior boys and girls were able to capture the title of “badminton champions”.
This fall’s annual upperclassmen physical education badminton tournament was an exciting one. One girl’s team and one boy’s team from each gym class participated in the school event. The winners of the boy’s tournament were seniors Byron Tannous and Matt Keeny. The girl’s tournament winners were seniors Nicoll Lezano and Tori Zander.
When asked what it was like to win such a renowned tournament, Byron Tannous replied, “I felt like Leonidas in the battle against the Persians…glorious.”
The runners-up of this event were Ciro Chairo, Bruce Yocum, Steph Cabral, and Lauren Meachem. Both teams helped make the championship games entertaining and made them a competitive battle to the finish.
Interestingly, this year, three out of the four winners are members of the Upper Perkiomen Tennis Program. So, to those underclassmen with big dreams of someday winning this tournament it might prove advantageous to join the tennis team.
