The Miller-Keystone Blood Center will be conducting a blood drive at the high school on March 1.
A representative of the blood bank addressed the high school's juniors and seniors in an assembly designed to drum up participation in the event.
Mrs. Carol Graves summed up the guidelines for giving blood and sought to dispel myths, such as one can get AIDS from giving blood.
Also addressing the assembly were too Upper Perk students whose lives were at least partially saved by blood transfusions.
Samantha Goshow, who has brain tumors, talked about receiving needed blood and expressed her gratitude to those who donated.
Gary Keller, a cancer sufferer, also addressed the students and staff. Displayed behind Gary was a string of multi-colored beads summarizing the steps in his treatment, including 11 red ones signifying blood transfusions.
Erich Keyser read a letter from Gary's father, who was ill on the day of the assembly, that pointed out the necessity of blood donation to help patients such as his son.
The event is being organized under the auspices of high school nurse Mrs. Lynn Wolfgang with help from juniors Angela Montalvo and Melinda Miley.
