Recently, UPHS social studies teacher, Mr. Scott Voth received an award from the Bucks County Habitat for his dedication to the Habitat for Humanity project.

Students in his Contemporary Issues course use their volunteer work for their senior project or for a course requirement. This is the fourth year students have participated in the program. The students put up dry wall, paint, plant trees, etc. for the houses being built. The development is located in Trumbauersville, and it contains 37 town houses.

Mr. Voth said, “This award is not about me, it is a testament to the students of Upper Perk. The kids I have taken out there have worked extremely hard,”

The veteran high school teacher wants students to realize that “special interest” is not a bad word. Mr. Voth wants students to expand their knowledge, experience and identification beyond the immediate environment of the Valley. He feels that helping with Habitat and other programs which help those less fortunate is in one’s self-interest economically and spiritually.

Zeke Mack (a senior in Mr. Voth’s class that participated in the project) said, “This was a project that was just as much fun as it was a learning experience. In fact many of my friends and I are planning to go back during our summer vacation to give some of our time back to the community.”
