Last week, Doug Brandl from Rachel’s Challenge came to Grand Prairie High School to speak to juniors and sophomores about the program Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel Joy Scott was a young girl who wanted to make an impact on her classmates and the world.

On April 20, 1999, Rachel was shot and killed by her classmates, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Rachel was the first student to die in the Columbine High School Shooting, according to Brandl who stated that it's one of the worse high school shootings in this country's history.

“She was always ready to stand up for anyone who she felt was mistreated,” stated father, Darell Scott.

According to Rachel’s challenge, Rachel left behind many diaries and an essay stating how she wanted to make a good impact on the world.

“People will never know how far a little kindness can go ,” Scott stated.

According to Rachel’s challenge, the mission of the program is to help everyone make this world a better place. The program has hit nation-wide, trailing through many high schools around the United States.

“We exist to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion,” states the program.

Grand Prairie High School has taken up the challenge. Students at GP were allowed to sign a poster pledging that they accept the challenge that is given.

“I think that this is so cool, that we have this here now,” said sophomore, Jacob Juarez.

According to Assistant Principal Anthony Threets, a club will be established at school. Students, who received leadership training specifically for the program, will lead the efforts in helping out their peers.

“We will start our own chain reaction,” stated Threets.

I love Rachel's challenge. Ever since I heard about it I started thinking that everybody needs to be a part of this & not just school's. We as American's still have alot of kindness & love to offer one another if only we can just start doing. It's like various artist sang in the 80's "WE ARE THE WORLD" & "WE ARE THE FUTURE" so let's make it a better place.
