The Kohala Cowboys seek to end the BIIF regular season with an undefeated record as they take on the Konawaena Wildcats tonight for their season finale. The opportunity to finish the season undefeated came courtesy of a couple impressive wins over Division I teams Honokaa and Kealakehe.
On February 5th, the Honokaa Dragons traveled to Kamehameha Park to take on the Cowboys. There was a lot of hype surrounding these two rivals, and the game did not disappoint. The two teams each had scoring spurts in the first half to put them in the lead at different times, but at the end of the second period the score was locked at 26 apiece.
The tight game continued through the third quarter with neither team able to take a sizeable lead. Honokaa took a one-point advantage into the final 30 seconds of the game, and Senior guard Brandon Bautista fouled out with 20 seconds remaining. Luckily for the Cowboys, Honokaa Senior Kapena Esquerra missed both free throws off of Bautista’s foul and Kohala’s Andrew Trump was fouled on the rebound. Trump hit both of his free throws in front of a jubilant crowd at Hisaoka Gym, and the Cowboys were able to muster a strong defensive stand to win 46-45.
Last Tuesday, the Cowboys went on the road to take on the Waveriders of Kealakehe High. After taking advantage of Kealakehe’s turnovers the Cowboys built a double-digit lead mid-way through the second quarter.
The Waveriders struck back with a run of their own cutting the Cowboys’ lead to three at half time with the score 24-21 Kohala.
That’s the closest Kealakehe would get the rest of the night. The Cowboys rode a strong second half performance from Bautista to cruise to a 43-37 victory over the Waveriders.
Kohala finishes up the regular season with a home game against Konawaena tonight at Hisaoka Gym.
