The current fashion trend in low-rise jeans has caused teens across the nation to experience a loss of feeling or a tingling sensation in the leg due to a pinched nerve in the hip.
Though the pants are currently considered very stylish, one might not realize there is a danger in wearing them.
If these pants are too tight or too low, one can “squeeze a sensory nerve under the hip bone that causes a tingling sensation into the thighs called
meralgia paresthetica,” according to Canadian Medical Association Journal.
While the nerve damage is not too serious, the symptoms might persist if the jeans are worn regularly,” said Dr. Malvinder Parmar, medical director at the Timmins and District Hospital in the Canadian province of Ontario.
These pants can cause men and women alike, a great tingly or burning sensation when there is pressure on the sensory nerves and compression on other ligaments.
Though the tingling goes away on its own after time, it can cause permanent numbness, if it is not recognized and the pants are still worn.
People with diseases such as, diabetes may have harsher effects than someone else who wears these pants.
Parmar also stated, “I saw three patients in succession, one who thought she had multiple sclerosis because of the symptoms- a disease of the nervous system affecting the spinal cord.”
The other two patients Parmar saw both had tenderness in their thighs. These patients were all women aging from 22-25.
Though this may seem to only effect women, men also may be a subject to the tingling.
Men who wear tight fitting jeans or keep their wallet in their pant pockets may recognize the sensations. This is a sign to stop wearing the pants or putting your wallet in your pockets for a period of time. That will make the sensations and the other symptoms go away.
Hip huggers were born in the 60’s when teens and celeberties decided to break away from the conservative culture we once had.
These types of pants were the first article of clothing that revealed the midriff in a casual style.
Many models often wear these low- rise pants, as well as members of The Rolling Stones, The Who and current pop celebs Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera; making the pants a style for both men and women. Since celebs started displaying this style , there was no longer conservative leisure dressing.
Hip huggers are often thought of as “tight- fitting flares,” but hip huggers are actually pants that ride low on the hip instead of fitting at the waist.
Though hip huggers have a danger, teens across America are still wearing the pants, even if they are aware or unaware of the effects that they have.
