Cranes hoist AC units high into the air and fresh yellow and blue bathroom tiles glisten in the blistering afternoon sun as a mass of ghostly looking concrete begins to resemble a building.

“A freshman pool on the fourth floor,” was to be one of the many day dreamt additions to the new building jokingly said Principal Alex Martinez.

Along with many bigger and better classrooms for students, there will be rewards for the teachers who have endured cramped classrooms and a bare teacher’s lounge. With four new teachers’ lounges and a new attendance and curriculum office, there will be perks for teachers displaced from their worn out old classrooms.

“It’s going to be so beautiful, I’m so excited,” said Assistant Principal Carmen Jones-Carey. She along with the other AP’s of 104 will be newly located in this building.

Upon the completion of this project in January. Inspectors will begin to process requirements for the opening in late February or early March. In addition there will be changes for the rest of the school.

“There will be a quick removal of the ‘10 pack’ [of portables] to make room for a larger parking lot,” said Assistant Principal Manny Riera. It has not been dicided whether it will be a student or a teacher parking, the new parking will relieve much of the congestion caused by the small size of the current lot.

With the first walk-through occurring, everything seems to be going even better than scheduled with contractors working with the community and the school to ensure that this project ends up being a successful addition.

“This company has gone above and beyond their job by helping us during the hurricane to pick up trash and debris and they have been all around fantastic and have always been there to help,” said Riera.

The left-over classes in the old part of the school will likely be filled with teachers. “If the moneys are available,” said Martinez. He hopes to someday hire a brand new batch of teachers to fill these classrooms and reduce class size to more manageable numbers.

What now looks like a skeletal image of architectural achievement will soon become a busy and bustling addition to the school.
