The happy couple at their anniversary celebration. - Reese Frayser
Last Saturday, March 24, my great grandparents Laurence “Campy” Campton, 95, and his wife Daisy, 92, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in Salida, Colorado. They were married on March 28, 1937. Friends and family gathered to help celebrate, including their 3 kids, 12 grandkids, 28 great grandkids, and one great great grandkid.
When they met in 1937 Daisy says that upon meeting, she thought Campton “was just a nice guy.” Campy says that the first time he saw Daisy he thought he should “grab her before someone else does.”
They were married on Easter Sunday in 1937 when Campton was 20 and Daisy was 17 and they have been going strong ever since. Campy says that the key to success for married couples is “communication.”
This was not the only anniversary to be celebrated.
Laurence Campton served our country as a member of the 22nd Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division in front line combat and was in the Battle of the Bulge. There, he was captured and taken as a prisoner of war. He does not like to talk about this experience much but he has said that he stayed there for 91 days and when he was finally liberated he weighed only 92 pounds.
Campy was liberated on his wedding anniversary and says he “never has any trouble remembering either one of [the anniversaries].”
Daisy had a hard time getting through the days when she found out her husband was a prisoner of war, but she put her faith in God and she knew that she would see him again. “Our love brought us through everything.”
