The familiar feeling arrives once again. When the weather becomes extremely humid and classes are coming to an end. But, along with classes, Cardozo sports teams also conclude their seasons. Each team brushed off the sluggishness that comes with the end of the year and put their best foots forward to end their year with a bang.
The Varsity Girls lacrosse team is one of many teams that gave all they had to make sure they ended their season giving their best. With Coach Lou DeCicco and new players the team was set for a new beginning. Their strive got them to the first round of playoffs where they lost to long time rivals Midwood, 15 to 4, ending their season with a 6-6 record, which placed them third in the division. This 2010 season was the first year in which the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team won seven games in a season.
The varsity boy’s tennis team is another team that had great success, but not enough to take home a championship. Lead by Coach Howard Arons, the team did win their 25th division title with an undefeated 12-0 record. They went on to beat Forest Hills H.S 4-1 in the semi-finals, and the Judges came within one game of winning a city title. The championship game came against Beacon H.S, where the Judges lost 1-4, ending their season on a down note.
This year, the girl’s tennis team claimed their title as city champions. With an 11-1 record, the team won their division, and went confidently into playoffs. They beat Hunter High School 5-0 in the quarter finals and Stuyvesant High School 5-0 in the semi-finals. The championship game against Leon Goldstein was anything but easy; it was a tight match that had everyone gritting their teeth. But the Judges came out victorious, winning 3-2 and making them city champions. This marks the third year consecutive year Cardozo has won a city title.
Another team with surprising success was the Boys Varsity Baseball team. What most thought would be a “rebuilding year” turned out to be one of the most successful seasons yet. With a 14-2 record, the Judges Varsity Baseball team claimed the Queens East Division Championship. This is the first championship they won in six years. Their success and effort got the team to the first round of playoffs where they lost against Brooklyn Technical H.S, 4-7.
The girl’s softball season was a memorable one. Locked in a tie atop the division with rival Bayside, Cardozo played one last regular season game to determine the division champ. In a hard fought game, Cardozo beat Bayside 1-0. However, their playoff run came to an end after losing to Tottenville for the second straight year.
After a successful season, the girls fencing team lost to eventual PSAL champions Hunter in the playoffs. They went 9-0 in their division, their best record in recent history.
The girl’s handball team, who went undefeated, once again topped their division easily. However, like many other teams, they lost late into the playoffs after winning their first 2 rounds. Eventual champs Midwood beat Cardozo 4-1 in the semifinals.
