1 Corinthians 9:24-25 states that, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
Last October, a fearless Lakeside pastor, a daring computer education teacher, and a beloved language arts teacher took on the Warrior Dash in the nearby town of Johnson Creek. Here at Lakeside, they are otherwise known as Pastor Davisson, Mr. Klug, and Mrs. Schommer.
Warrior Adam Riedel and former Warrior, Andrea Oppermann, ran the dash the day before. There were very interesting weather patterns for the action-packed, two-day event.
It was dry and dusty one day, but wet and muddy the next. All the participants undertook something that challenged them in every physical way possible.
It was a five kilometer race, while this is not exactly a marathon, it was just as rigorous. The trio of teachers had to run about half of a mile before they came to their first obstacle.
Some of the obstacles included crazy things such as climbing over cargo nets, crawling under wire, shimmying over wooden barricades, and running past flamethrowers.
Pastor Davisson recalls that he even had to “help a women over the cargo nets because she was afraid of heights.”
Pastor Davisson said that his favorite part of the entire race was “crawling through the swamp water” portion of the gruelling race.
Another favorite moment was when all the participants received smoked turkey legs at the finish line.
Lakeside’s religion teacher finished with a very strong third in his age group in the race. His final time was 19 minutes and 46 seconds.
Mrs. Schommer said that her favorite memory was either “jumping over the fire or climbing a 12-foot vertical wooden wall.”
She said that another favorite memory was “watching people eating the giant turkey legs.” She recalls that at the finish line, fire trucks waited to rinse the mud off of the filthy competitors.
Mrs. Schommer’s final finish time was an impressive 34 minutes and 39 seconds. She finished with a solid tenth in her age group.
Lakeside’s beloved computer teacher, Mr. Klug, also had a solid showing in the race.
He rounded off the group’s favorite memories with the most popular answer, “I liked watching the runners eat their turkey legs.”
