Lemony Snicket’s, A Series of Unfortunate Events, is one hilarious and dazzling movie. The film is based on a series of books about three children and their adventures. The story is about the Bauedelaire children, who become orphans after a very unfortunate event. Jude Law plays Lemony Snicket, the narrator of the film.
The children are Violet, (Emily Browning), Klaus, (Liam Aiken), and Sunny, (Kara and Shelby Hoffman, twins). All three are very unique children with their own special talents. Violet is the oldest and is the inventor. She always finds something in every situation. Klaus is very smart and loves books. He has read every book he ever could and remembers everything he ever read. And then there is Sunny who is just an infant, and well, she bites.
Sunny’s talent is biting and it does come in handy.
The children are passed between kooky guardians after the death of their parents. Count Olaf, played by Jim Carrey, is the most eccentric of the lot. Carrey is hilarious in this movie and does one fantastic job portraying the offbeat Olaf. Olaf is after the Bauedelaire’s fortune, and he will do anything to get it. He is pursuing the children throughout the movie.
The movie also stars Meryl Streep, Billy Connolly, Cedric the Entertainer, and Dustin Hoffman even shows up.
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny go through some extreme hardships that normal children could not handle. But these three are not normal children; they are more unique that anyone can understand.
The movie is a family film that will keep you entertained. A Series of Unfortunate Events may not look like a movie for all you older kids, but I believe it is one that will be loved by all ages. The movie contains lots of subtle humor. And one of my favorites is when Sunny, who is just a baby, is given subtitles so the audience knows what she is saying.
Unfortunate Events is also a very dark film. The movie is directed in an almost Tim Burton style, but Brad Silberling directs the movie. It is an offhand film that is a different style than most kid movies.
I feel that the moral of the movie is that adults never listen to children, and that you can overcome any hardships, such as a series of unfortunate events in your own life. Even though the Bauedelaires tragedies are a little more than unfortunate, they are horrible.
My only complaint with the film is the end. Many things are left unexplained, so if you are a person who needs to know everything happening in a movie you may get a bit frustrated. Little details and mysteries go with out explanation, and you are left wondering. I have not read the books, but it may solve some of the problems by reading it before or after you see the film. I really enjoy this twisted movie. It is very fun and keeps you entertained the whole time. The plot is good and the actors very unique and funny. The movie is a must see for everyone.
Lemony Snicket’s, A Series of Unfortunate Events is a wonderfully made film, and I recommend everyone go out and see it. If you do not want to pay the outrageous eight dollars in theaters, you must definitely rent this one.
