Tieryn Potratz has been named an all-stater for the 2007 softball season. She finished the year with 83 hits, 18 doubles, and 53 runs.

With such outstanding statistics, the one that speaks for itself is the fact that out of 185 at plate appearances, Potratz has only heard the umpire yell, “You’re out” three times. This remarkable consistency would be something you would expect from a senior lead hitter, but not from Potratz, a sophomore pitcher.

Even though Potratz may not look the part, “size doesn’t matter,” according to softball coach Andi Adams. Potratz has put her time in year round to earn this award.

“I went to Softball Connection once or twice a week in the off season,” said Potratz.

Not only does Potratz practice her hitting in the off season, she spends time pitching and conditioning. The Fort Dodge softball program has excelled in the past seven seasons, and Coach Adams expects a lot out of her players.

“I sometimes set what seem like unrealistic goals for the team and players, but I think it makes the team and players achieve more,” said Adams.

Potratz’s consistency is never questioned. She has only struck out three times in 185 at bats. How does Potratz do it?

“Being a pitcher,” said Potratz, “ allows me to assume which type of pitch will come, because I like to think what pitch I would use.” Adams believes that Potratz’s vision of the ball and quick wrists are what make her unique.

Being an all-stater her sophomore year adds pressure on her for next season.

“She is not a surprise to anybody now; the target is on her next season,” said Adams. Tieryn says she will continue to push herself and work harder for next season.
