On Tuesday December 4, the Dodger basketball teams had a four game sweep over the Des Moines North Polar Bears, but the trip home wouldn’t come quite as easily for the Dodgers as the victories.

During the varsity boys’ game, some Dodger parents that had left after the girls’ game called and communicated with the coaches about the dangerous conditions of the roads.

Athletics Director Tom Kinseth stated, “The coaches were informed of the unsafe conditions. There were cars in the ditches and vehicles were going 10 to 15 miles per hour to prevent sliding.”

The bus drivers were also contacted by their dispatchers and were recommended not to drive.

With all of the hotel options in Des Moines, there was no problem finding a place for the Dodgers to spend the night.

“We found some hotels that we had Fort Dodge connections with that were very accommodating. We were given a team discount rate just like we would have if we were in a state tournament,” Kinseth said.

The team rate is $74 per room.

The cost for the stay was covered by the Activity account, and the teams safely arrived back at the high school before noon the next day.

Kinseth added, “The cost of a hotel is worth paying compared to risking our students’ lives.”
