With Franklin’s boys soccer team coming off of a close loss to Bowling Green High, last Thursday; Franklin heads to Mayfield KY for a tournament this weekend. It is difficult to know what to expect in the season that is ahead of them. Will they win? Will they lose? No one knows for sure.
Bowling Green has always been a test for the Franklin squad. Last year, the squad was beaten by them 9-0. So last Thursday when Bowling Green came to town to play them again, the same outcome was expected. Early on, this is how it seemed the game was going to go, with Bowling Green scoring their first goal only 9 minutes into the game. Soon after that, Franklin scored to tie the game up, 1-1. Going into halftime, the game was tied and Bowling Green was on their heels.
As the second half started, Bowling Green scored two goals. Even with Franklin down two goals, they pushed forward to score another. Franklin managed to mount this comeback with two ejected players and another with an injured ankle. Franklin- even with three players down- did not allow another goal and took the loss, 3-2.
In spite of a tough loss, Franklin took the outcome in stride; they gained confidence to take into the tournament next weekend. "That game was the game to set our pace for the season," said Head Coach Jay Gravette. "We are not a team to give up, even when were knocked down 7 times."
This being said, Franklin will be a team to watch as the season progresses and the District/Regional tournaments come around. "We may not go all the way this year, although we will cause the bigger teams some BIG problems." says co-captain and senior, Austin Wright. So if you are looking for something to do on a weeknight, go watch your hometown cats battle for a good spot in Octobers final games. You may be surprised in what you see.
