Valentine's Lollipops are one of the favorite treats given to friends. - Clara Arnold
Walking the halls in a high school on Valentine’s Day will show a sight of lockers adorned with flowers on top of them, teddy bears being carried around by girls, and cards with candies friends give to one another.
It’s the day that some people dread, while others count down the seconds until it arrives, Valentine's Day is one holiday that just might be overrated.
Kendra Vanness, a junior at CAL, says that she prefers Thanksgiving over any other holiday, stating that she doesn’t “really pay attention [to Valentine's Day].”
A recent survey polled by PULL Magazine, found that only 28 percent of their readers viewed Valentine’s Day as important.
Jenn Van Riessen, an Urbandale High School sophomore, says that she is one of those people who view V-Day as meaningful. “I like it because people tend to show more appreciation for their family and friends.”
Vanness, on the other hand, says that she could care less if it were there or not. “I don’t really care to get anything; it’s just not my holiday.”
It may not be her holiday, but in the same study done by PULL Magazine, 56 percent of their subjects in the survey will buy someone a present, with 11 percent feeling compelled to do so.
The presents mostly received by CAL High School girls this year appeared to be flowers, with vases of flowers sitting on top of the lockers, and countless other bouquets still at home.
“It’s a great holiday because when everyone gets excited about something, then it just makes it that much more fun to be around [them],” said Riessen.
