This year, Norfolk Collegiate ninth-grade homerooms are taking trips to Crossroads Elementary School. Crossroads is a Title One public school, which means the school is provided extra funding to help students in poverty or students whose first language is not English.  The ninth graders are helping the students learn by doing one-on-one tutoring sessions.

Mr. Mundy said the program started when he went to a conference last year at the National Association of Independent Schools where the president said, “Even though we are a private school, we still should be responsible for all kids.” When Mr.Pav’s homeroom went to Crossroads, the teacher had the NCS freshmen helping her students with subjects like reading.

The program is set up so every time the ninth-graders go back, they will be paired with the same teacher in the same class.  By doing so, the ninth-grade students will get more involved in what the Crossroads students are doing.

Mr.Pav sat in on two classes, and he thought the program will be a good change of scene for the kids at Norfolk Collegiate. He said, “Crossroads is a different [setting] and is highly integrated [with students from many backgrounds].”
