On Thursday November 7th, Tabb’s football team made the regional playoffs for the first time since 1993. They beat Warhill High School 41-3 to clinch the playoff berth that had escaped them for fifteen years. The last two years the regional playoffs had seemed within grasp, only to be lost again. In 2006, Tabb lost to Smithfield in overtime, and in 2007, they lost to Jamestown by one point.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that the team has accomplished something that you were a part of,” said Junior Dillon Biagas.
Biagas earned second-team All-Bay Rivers District honors with 78 tackles. Other players who earned all-district honors include first-team offense players Patrick O’Brien, Ryan Cummins, Corey Patrick, Jeff Schurott, and Zach Wilson, and first-team defense players Charles Crawford and Ian Haislip. Second-team offense players include Sean Case and Chris Parham, and second-team defense players include Jonathan Bratsveen and Ryan Cummins. Bobby Mills and Wade McIntosh earned Honorable Mention all-district honors.
The 8-2 Tigers arrived at Powhatan High School with a 9-1 record, the following Friday. “I liked being in the playoff atmosphere and knowing that we’ve done something that hasn’t been done in a long time,” said Senior Quarterback Sean Case.
The Indians were tough competition, but Tabb held their own. At one point in the game, the Tigers held the Indians to a lead of only three points, the score being 20-17. Corey Patrick and Chris Parham both scored touchdowns, and Nick Henderson kicked a field goal. However, with five minutes and 52 seconds left to play in the fourth quarter, Powhatan’s Vance Hendren ran up the sideline for a 78-yard touchdown. The final score of the game was Powhatan 27, Tabb 17.
Despite the disappointing loss and the loss of sixteen seniors, returners are looking forward to next year. “I want us to play as hard as we did this year, and maybe go even farther,” said Biagas. Sophomore Ian Haislip said, “I want to keep the intensity up and succeed next year by matching what we did this year.”
